Ice Racing on Shawano Lake 2009

On Sunday, January 18, Mona and I stopped in at the Fire On Ice races on Shawano Lake on our way to drop of the computer at the computer place in Green Bay. (Our computer is sick again.)

The easiest access to the races is by the public boat launch in Cecil. The landing appeared to be in better shape this week than last week. There were all kinds of cars, trucks, ATV's and snowmobiles out there. Although I don't know much about them, the races have been held on Sunday afternoons again this year. This race was later in the afternoon and appears to only have four cars in it however, earlier races had more participants.

It's a good place to join the crowd and spend a Sunday afternoon. You can even get yourself a brat or hot dog as well as something to drink on the ice. You could even tune in on your car FM radio and keep up with what was going on as well as lap by lap information.

Toward the end of the video you can hear a lot of extra noise. There was a kid on a four wheeler next to me. Another lesson learned for in the future.

Hi. My name is Erik. I will be racing this 2011 season as well and just a little info about the races for you. The races are held every Sunday starting the first weekend in January and are held normally for 8 weeks if weather permits. Races start at 1:00pm Sunday afternoon but if you want to see ALL the action and get a good parking spot your best bet would be to show up early... Driver check-in is at noon. There are 4 classes; Front Wheel Drive Studded, Front Wheel Drive Non-Studded, Rear Wheel Drive Non-Studded and last but certainly not least are the incredibly fast OUTLAWS! Outlaws are the Rear Wheel Drive Studded racers. One of the cars that races every year is a genuine Asphalt Racer. When I say fast I mean the video for this post does not do these guys justice. We are talking towards 80+ miles an hour ON THE ICE! It wouldn't be as much of a big deal if the track was bigger but this track is only around 1/3 of a mile! To get into the pit area to see the cars up close there is a 5 dollar "donation" to the Fire On Ice Club and a waiver to sign. There is Brats, Hotdogs, Hamburgers, Hot Cocoa, and even Amico's Pizza! Tell your friends and join us this year for THE RACES IN THE CECIL BAY!!!
