John & Mona's Blog

Enjoying ourselves at the Pier at Santa Monica Beach.

DSC03524

The bus ride from the Hotel in downtown L.A. to the beach took just over an hour. (I got the “Senior Discount”) to get to the Pier. It took over two hours to get back to the Hotel because of the traffic. Don’t think I’d like to have to deal with the traffic every day. It’s bad enough to drive through Shawano sometimes.

Neverman Third Annual Family Reunion (2012)

JED_90177 CROPPED

This year the Reunion ran from May 17th to May 20th in Albany, WI. (South of Madison) at Mona’s brother’s house. Mona and I arrived on Saturday the 19th. The above photo is a group shot of everyone sitting on the famous “Hill” with their favorite hats.

The last photo John cut himself off the only photo the flash worked on the whole group. (No hats.) The dates have already been set for 2013. Plenty of food and drinks of all kinds are not scarce at these events.

Time Keeps Flyin' By...

Been retired for over 9 weeks already. Time really flies. Sure doesn't seem that long.
I haven't got a whole lot done yet either.  Made over a dozen bird houses. (Tracy painted half of them.) Made a dozen pens or so and did some finishing work in the garage that's been waiting to get done for 7 years already.

Only got out fishing once so far since last October and that was about 5 weeks ago. Caught enough White Bass for quite a few meals. They taste good deep fried in "Panko" or "Beer Batter". We've had them both ways so far.
White Bass caught at Winneconne early this Spring with a
friend who said he was going to take me out for Walleye
for almost 20 years. Had a great time.
I still have to clean up the boat and get it ready for the water as well as change the line on a number of rods and reels before we go up to the Chippewa Flowage in about three weeks. Hope to get it in Shawano Lake this week to make sure I can get it started first. Maybe catch a few panfish at the same time?

Some of our tomato plants we started in the green house are getting to be almost a foot tall already. We can't get the garden worked up either because of the frost every night for a period there and now we've had rain for about a week. Last year it was the 4th of July before we finished the garden because it was so wet.  We have 5 different kinds of tomatoes and at least that in different types of hot peppers. Our hot little purple pepper plant made it through another winter. We've had it for about 12 years so far and we've had peppers every year. We started a second plant about a year ago to back this one up in case something happens to it.

Hey! Hey! It’s about time…

As of tomorrow, I’ll be retired for one week. I sure didn’t get much done during my first week off from work. Can’t say the weather wasn’t cooperative, Mona had off yesterday and we had temperatures in the 50’s.

Went to the Sandbar for lunch after we got groceries. Mona wanted to make sure we got $100.00 worth of groceries so she could get a few cents of on some shredded cheese.

I said: “A $100.00 – looks closer to $250.00 to me.”  Ended up to be $244.00 and change. Didn’t even need two carts.

Fire on Ice 2012

We ended up getting there late but Fire on Ice is happening again this year. They switched from Cecil Bay to the County Park area on Shawano Lake I assume to coincide with the famous Figure 8 Musky Club Fishing Tournament this weekend. The landing to access the contest appears to be better on the other side of the lake.  The Fishing Tournament has a pretty good draw by itself.

As you can see – the number of cars in the races that were left when we finally arrived was slim but they still gave it there all.

Snowmobile Race

Races took place at the Red River area just North of Dykesville on the Bay of Green Bay on February 11.  The temperatures were in the low single digits and and the wind chill was minus digits (Sub-zero). There was a nip in the air…

Granddaughter Miranda on sled # 65 participated in her first snowmobile races over the weekend. Her friend Nick posed for a shot on a classic sled # 19.

Miranda’s first run hit 61 mile per hour while her last run topped out at 91. Nick, I assume not on the vintage sled but on his racing sled had a high speed of 101 which was the fastest speed of the day. Nick’s parents run Simonar Sports Inc. in Luxemburg, WI. There was a little bit of tragedy that followed the race when Miranda and Nick decided to take a run after the race had ended. For some reason Nick wiped out his sled and ended up in the hospital over night. At this time everything appears to be OK.

Christmas Eve 2011

Corey, Tracy and Miranda came up for Christmas Supper and the exchange of gifts at our house on Christmas Eve again this year. Since John normally has the camera in his hands he took some pictures for our photo albums. He had the tripod ready but forgot to get a shot of the entire group at once. (Maybe next time?)

I had a couple requests from people to see some of the pens I’ve made over the last several months. This is most of what I’ve done so far. I would guess there should be over 40 different types of wood.
